Dr. Leah Guttman, Psy.D.

I’ve always had a passion for understanding people’s emotional lives.

I began my doctoral training in psychology at Yale University, where I conducted research on the relationship between rumination and depression during the college years.

Though fascinated by research, I found myself more interested in helping people overcome early life adversity to lead more successful lives. I transitioned to a clinically-oriented training program in the East Bronx where I specialized in clinical practice for mood and anxiety disorders. Along the way I nurtured a love for New York City, my home for over ten years.

I completed my internship at New York City Health & Hospitals and my postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University, where I held a dual specialization in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). At Stanford I worked alongside researchers who were instrumental in conducting the initial clinical trials for these treatments. Before opening my private practice, I was a clinical psychologist and supervisor at Bradley Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Brown University School of Medicine.

As my practice expanded, I developed an interest in working with couples, particularly those facing major life changes like cohabitation, marriage and parenting. More than half my practice is now devoted to helping couples move from distress to recovery using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an empirically supported intervention.

Aside from being a psychologist, I am a parent of two young girls, dog mama and amateur writer.
